The Trafalgar Studios welcomes something both hilarious and topical as Speech And Debate makes its UK debut under the direction of London theatre regular and voice-over actor Tom Attenborough. Taking audiences back to high school and focusing on the comic coming-together of three teenagers, it has already won admiration on the other side of the Atlantic and will undoubtedly win over audiences here as well.
Stephen Karam wrote the play a decade ago and it has since been stage on numerous occasions and was even adapted for the screen. Now it lands in the West End for London theatregoers to get a look-in and they will finally see why this has won over audiences and critics overseas.
The characters at the heart of Speech And Debate are Diwata, Solomon and Howie, who have many things in common but don’t find on another until a scandal rocks the school. Now they have met face to face they can set up a Speech and Debate team so that their voices can be heard.
Stephen Karam has penned many plays during his career and these have attracted plenty of attention thanks to their awards and nominations (he won the Tony Award for Best New Play for The Humans this year, for example). His credits include Son Of A Prophet, Dark Sisters, Girl On Girl and columbinus, to name but a few.
But now his work makes it to the West End as Speech And Debate is performed at the Trafalgar Studios 2 on Whitehall. It makes its anticipated debut on Wednesday 22nd February 2017.
