The Olivier National Theatre welcomes this new play from Rory Mullarkey, which stars John Heffernan in the role of English Patron Saint George.

But this is no ordinary re-telling of the myth of Saint George. Instead, Mullarkey has crafted something new which will point a magnifying glass at real life problems facing the England in the 21st century as the story of the knight displays parallels to modern sensibilities.

With a mythic tale, a dragon and some impressive performances from a stellar cast, St George And The Dragon is bound to be a much-talked-about production in the latter half of 2017.

It is a story with all of the ingredients needed to make a gripping yarn, with a woman to save, a dragon terrorising a village and a knight in shining armour arriving to the rescue. But it doesn’t just deal with the events itself, but also the repercussions as the community grows and George becomes a figure of legend to a country far away. Utilising a range of storytelling techniques audiences will learn and consider George’s role in England and the way in which England has been shaped into what we see today.

John Heffernan, as George, takes to the stage of the Olivier National Theatre having previously appeared in many other shows for the South Bank venue. They include After The Dance and The Habit Of Art, amongst others, whilst other credits include The Hothouse at the Trafalgar Studios. Audiences might also recognise his work from television shows such as Luther, The Crown and Ripper Street, to name but a few.

But now he returns to the National as St George And The Dragon makes its way to the Olivier Stage of the prestigious South Bank venue, under the direction of Lyndsay Turner, on Tuesday 3rd October 2017.
