Amongst the array of high profile shows running in the capital it can take a lot to stand out but come 2017 one production headed to the Vaudeville Theatre will have a lot of aces up its sleeve as Amanda Holden and Tamzin Outhwaite are amongst those cast in Richard Harris’s Stepping Out.
Not only does the show feature great names amongst its cast members, a proven track record following its debut in the 1980s and a writer in Richard Harris, it also boasts a director in Maria Friedman, the multi-Olivier Award-winning performer and director whose work has been seen around the West End for many years. All of this combines to make this one of the must-see shows of 2017.
In Stepping Out we meet a range of colourful characters portrayed by Holden, Outhwaite, Angela Griffin, Nicola Stephenson and Tracy-Ann Oberman, amongst others, but they have happened on an interesting way of relieving life’s pressures – by taking part in dancing classes. After the classes are set up they get stuck in, but they don’t have time to perfect their discipline before they’re recruited for a major performance. As it all leads to the big day we learn more about the characters and their unique personalities.
But why does all of this make it a must-see show? Consider Amanda Holden, for example, who has enjoyed a successful career in the spotlight. Though she is perhaps best known as a Britain’s Got Talent judge, she has also made her mark on the West End stage, with Shrek The Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane (as Princess Fiona) and Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Shaftesbury Theatre. Such roles have landed her many awards and nominations, but they are not the limit to her credits, with appearances in film and television as well.
Then there’s the rest of the cast, which includes some equally talented and experienced performers, and a script that has been praised ever since Richard Harris put pen to paper.
So when Stepping Out, under the direction of Maria Friedman, appears at the Vaudeville Theatre, it is bound to cause a stir. It opens there on Tuesday 14th March 2017 (previews from Wednesday 1st March 2017).
