The stage is set for an “Emmerdale” reunion at the Arts Theatre in March as a writer for the soap, Karin Young, pens “The Awkward Squad” with the show’s Val Pollard, Charlie Hardwick, starring. The production is set to appear for just over a month at the venue with further cast members like Barbara Marten, Libby Davison and Lisa McGrillis taking on roles. It appears at the West End venue in the same year that audiences can also witness the likes of “Big Pants and Botox” and Cemlyn Jones, meaning that they have plenty of variety when it comes to stand-out productions.
“The Awkward Squad” focuses on Barbara Marten’s character of Lorna, who is hoping for a quiet weekend and has these dreams dashed when both of her daughters and her granddaughter arrive, along with their problems. She has spent her life as an upstanding member of the community and this has meant she is well used to helping others – as evidenced by her upcoming honorary PhD – and it is clear that some things never change. So instead of her quiet weekend she has to face problems like boob jobs, redundancies and more.
Charlie Hardwick portrays the role of Sandy, with Davison as Pam and McGrillis as Sarah.
Hardwick is well known to audiences of “Emmerdale” for her long-running role of Val Pollard, which has seen her win awards and receive numerous nominations over the years. She has also taken on other roles during her career, so in addition to the ITV soap London theatre audiences may recognise her from “Grumpy Old Women” and “Byker Grove” alongside films such as “The Scar”, “Purely Belter” and “Billy Elliot”.
Barbara Marten, meanwhile, has also appeared in numerous shows over the years and whereas Hardwick has “Emmerdale” her best known work is from the television show “Causalty”,though she has also appeared in “Fat Friends”, “Bob & Rose” and the movie “Between Two Women”.
