A classic play, immortalised on the screen by George Seaton’s acclaimed 1954 movie, “The Country Girl” is set to make an enormous impression on the stage of the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue this year. Reuniting two of the stars of the long running television show “Judge John Deed”, the play will feature both Martin Shaw and Jenny Seagrove in lead roles, whilst directing duties fall on the acclaimed London theatre director Rufus Norris.
George Seaton’s movie, which was adapted from Clifford Odets’s original play, focused on the turbulent relationship between a struggling actor, his wife and the director of a new play which is set to resurrect his career. Frank Elgin is down on his luck, having faded from the limelight and struggling to get roles, with his broken wife seemingly holding him back. For the director of a brand new show, Elgin is just right for the part and noticing the effect his marriage is having on his work, blames Elgin’s wife Georgie for his misgivings. But Elgin is actually drowning his sorrows for a mistake he made himself and his wife is bearing the brunt of his burden. It remains to be seen if this latest attempt to resurrect his career is the thing that Elgin needs to get on with his life.
Martin Shaw is best known to audiences for his mentioned role in the legal drama “Judge John Deed”, in which he starred alongside Jenny Seagrove throughout its run from 2001 to 2007. However, Shaw has had a long career that has seen him appear both onstage and onscreen with theatre credits that include “A Man for All Seasons” at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, in addition to various others roles across the capital and on Broadway. Beyond his famous legal drama, his television credits have included the likes of “Inspector George Gently” and Agatha Christie’s “Three Act Tragedy” (a Poirot mystery).
Seagrove was recently witnessed onstage in a production of “A Daughter’s a Daughter” at the Trafalgar Studios and was previously seen in the likes of “Absurd Person Singular” at the Garrick Theatre and “The Letter” at the Wyndham’s Theatre.
The Country Girl will appear at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue from Monday 11th October 2010 (preview from Wednesday 6th October 2010) to Saturday 26th February 2011.
