The classic story of The Exorcist makes its way to London’s West End for an unmissable run of performances at the Phoenix Theatre from October 2017.

The late William Peter Blatty has already earned success prior to creating his seminal work in 1971, publishing numerous books and writing for the big screen in decade prior. He even won money on a Groucho Marx game show in the early 1960s that allowed him to work full time and thus setting the wheels in motion for the emergence of one of cinemas greatest films.

But whilst the novel The Exorcist found its biggest success as the 1973 film directed by William Friedkin, its journey was not over, with numerous sequels emerging in later years and this stage version arriving on the scene in 2016. It is the latter that now makes its way to the Phoenix Theatre, providing a terrifying time in the West End in the darker winter months.

And those scares come from a story that has earned The Exorcist the honour of being amongst the scariest films of all time. It focuses on the character of Regan (played by Linda Blair on the big screen), who begins to change and prompts her mother to seek help, firstly from the hospital and eventually, upon realising her problems lie with demonic possession, from the priest Father Damien, who performs a shocking and traumatising exorcism.

So having caused nightmares for audiences around the world for decades a new incarnation of a classic story now makes its way to the Phoenix Theatre, where it will join a host of contrasting shows in London’s West End. It is safe to say this is a far cry from the musicals and comedies on offer around the capital, but considering the success of another horror show – The Woman in Black at the Fortune Theatre – we can expect a sizable audience for the biggest horror of all.

So make sure you catch The Exorcist, which is directed by the acclaimed Sean Mathias, when it runs at the West End’s Phoenix Theatre. The classic and memorable tale will raise tensions in the capital when it opens on Friday 20th October 2017.
