Over the years some big names have appeared on the stage of the Theatre Royal Haymarket and other locations around the West End and this tradition continues in 2017 as Damian Lewis takes on a lead role in the Tony Award-winning play The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia?
For West End audiences this is a chance to delve into a dark comedy that has already captured the imaginations of theatregoers stateside and will undoubtedly cause a stir over here as well.
The play was penned by the late Edward Albee (whose legacy is also celebrated in 2017 with his play Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? at the Harold Pinter Theatre) and was first seen over a decade ago. In addition to the Tony Award it earned it also came close to picking up the Pulitzer Prize for Drama
So its arrival in London with Damian Lewis in a lead role is big news and will ensure it captures similar success in the West End. After all, Lewis is one of the biggest performers in the country, finding fame on both sides of the Atlantic, so he provides a familiar face in addition to award-winning talent.
In the West End, the actor has previously appeared in the likes of American Buffalo at the Wyndham’s Theatre and The Misanthrope at the Harold Pinter Theatre (then called the Comedy Theatre). However, his best known work has been on the screen in the likes of Homeland, Band Of Brothers and Wolf Hall (in addition to hosting Have I Got News For You on numerous occasions).
For The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? he plays the character of Martin, a man whose typical family unit hides a shocking and unlikely secret. His wife Stevie and his son Billy might be surprised to discover that Martin has fallen for a goat, pushing their family unit to the limits and also pressing the audiences on matters that are considered taboo.
The multi award-wining play The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? plays at the Theatre Royal Haymarket under the direction of Ian Rickson from Wednesday 5th April 2017 (with previews from Friday 24th March 2017).
