Age Restriction: Age Recomendation 3+ (Guide only)
In recent years one children’s show has appeared in the West End regularly, entertaining younger audiences during the school holidays. This production, of course, is The Gruffalo and it is set for another appearance at the Lyric Theatre during the Christmas of 2015, ensuring that the London theatre scene still has something to offer for the whole family. So whether audiences head to see The Gruffalo at the Lyric Theatre or one of the many other offerings in town, this is sure to be a great season for kid’s shows in the West End.
The Gruffalo introduces audiences to the character of Mouse as he embarks on a Journey into a dark wood hunting for hazelnuts. He is oblivious to the dangers he is about to face and when some predators arrive on the scene he finds himself unable to fight then. All he has is his nut map and his imagination, but luckily the latter comes in handy as he makes up a story of a ferocious Gruffalo that successfully scares them away. But when he comes face to face with the monster from his imagination things take an interesting turn.
The story is adapted to the stage from the children’s picture book by Julia Donaldson (featuring illustrations by Axel Scheffler) and has become a popular part of the West End in recent years. But then the original book has plenty of fans as well, having emerged in 1999 and spawning a sequel in 2004 entitled The Gruffalo’s Child. The book was also adapted to the screen by the BBC in 2009 with celebrity voices that included Rob Brydon.
The production is directed by Olivia Jacobs, with Toby Mitchell the creative producer (together they also provide the script for the adaptation). Together they have created something that audiences have enjoyed for many years and this will undoubtedly be true this Christmas as this stand-out show returns once again.
The Gruffalo returns to the stage of the Lyric Theatre this Christmas with a run that begins on Tuesday 15th December 2015.
