The Theatre Royal Haymarket will soon become the new home of “The Lion in Winter”, the 1966 Broadway play from James Goldman that deals with the royal ascension to the throne in the 12th century. As such those with Theatre Tickets will be able to see some familiar faces in the roles with Robert Lindsay and Joanna Lumley among those taking on lead parts in the production. Both performers have made names for themselves on the stage and screen and ensure that “The Lion in Winter” receives plenty of attention (much like other Theatre Royal Haymarket productions like “The Tempest”).

The plot of “The Lion in Winter” deals with characters like Henry II, Queen Aquitaine, Prince John, Prince Richard and King Philip II of France as the issue of ascension to the English throne becomes an important topic. Henry II is at his chateau in Chinon and as he is joined by his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine (who he has had imprisoned for ten years) the topic comes to life – Henry wishes for Prince John to follow in his position as King, while his Queen prefers Prince Richard. Meanwhile, King Philip II of France has promised the heir a wife under the condition that a marriage actually takes place.

The production first appeared at Broadway’s Ambassador Theatre in 1966 with Christopher Walken among the cast members. It would reappear on numerous occasions, perhaps most notably in 1999 with Laurence Fishburne taking on the role of King Henry. So the show has a history of welcoming some familiar names to its roles and this time around Robert Lindsay and Joanna Lumley work under the direction of Sir Trevor Nunn, the Haymarket’s Artistic Director (who also directs “The Tempest” in 2011, as well as other stand-out shows during the year).

Both Lindsay and Lumley are known for television sitcoms – the former in “My Family” and the latter in “Absolutely Fabulous” – and have also appeared in previous west end shows – the former in “Onassis” at the Novello Theatre and the latter in “La Bete” at the Comedy Theatre (now the Harold Pinter Theatre).

“The Lion in Winter” runs at the Haymarket Theatre from Tuesday 15th November 2011 (previews from Friday 4th November 2011) until Saturday 28th January 2012.
