The Mentalists

The Wyndham’s Theatre is set to welcome yet another well known face from the screen later in the year when Stephen Merchant makes his West End debut in Richard Bean’s The Mentalists. He follows in the footsteps of Mark Strong and John Goodman, who appear in A View From The Bridge and American Buffalo, respectively, prior to The Mentalists’ debut at the venue in July.

The comic production is set to be directed by Abbey Wright whilst Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows actor Steffan Rhodri takes to the stage to star opposite Merchant.

Richard Bean’s play first emerged on South Bank over a decade ago and sees two characters confront their own relationship as they spend their time in an anonymous hotel in Finsbury Park, North London. Ted (Merchant) and Morrie (Rhodri) have a very unique relationship with one another and as tensions mount in the hotel the details of this arrangement come to light. Through these characters Bean casts a light on politics and social values as well, leading to a deeply poignant and memorable play.

Richard Bean is a well known English playwright and in addition to The Mentalists he has been responsible for numerous high profile shows, including last year’s surprise Great Britain, which cast a light on the media, plus One Man, Two Guvnors. The Mentalists debuted in 2002 and made an impression around the time that his other plays like Toast and Under The Whaleback emerged.

Stephen Merchant, meanwhile, needs little introduction thanks to his numerous television appearances, mostly with fellow comic Ricky Gervais, with whom he penned The Office, Extras and An Idiot Abroad. He is also well known for appearances in films such as Cemetery Junction (also writer), Run Fatboy Run, Hot Fuzz and the video game Portal 2, amongst many others.

2015 sees many well known names appear on a London stage, from the mentioned John Goodman and Mark Strong to others such as Kevin Spacey in Clarence Darrow at the Old Vic. With Stephen Merchant in The Mentalists it goes to show that this a good time to pick up theatre tickets and head to the capital.

The Mentalists is at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Monday 13th July 2015 (previews from Friday 3rd July 2015).
