At the end of the 16th century Shakespeare penned one of his many famous plays, which would stand the test of time and remain popular over 400 years later.
With that in mind it is no surprise that, once again, Shakespeare’s First Folio is raided for the latest staging at the RSC’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre. This anticipated production of The Merchant Of Venice, featuring some acclaimed talents working behind the scenes, lands on the stage from the summer of 2015.
With Polly Findlay, a regular voice in British theatre, directing, and performers such as Makram J Khoury, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Jamie Ballard and Patsy Ferrar appearing, this will be a must-see show.
Focusing on the titular Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare’s play sees Venice, the home of trade, on the brink. Shylock, a Jewish money loaner, comes face to face with Bassanio and their deal is broken, leading to Venice defaulting on its debts.
First seen by audiences in the early 17th century, the show has stood the test of time to remain one of Shakespeare’s best known shows. Not only has it been seen on stages around the globe it has also made it to the big screen with film and television versions going back to the early 20th century. Recent well known adaptations include 2004’s film version with Al Pacino.
In a year that also sees the likes of Henry V and Wendy And Peter Pan appear at the venue, The Merchant Of Venice makes its latest appearance on the stage when it runs at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from Thursday 14th May 2015.
