Kenneth Branagh’s season at the Garrick Theatre sees many well known shows head to the stage. Some are from the pen of William Shakespeare, as in Romeo & Juliet, and others are from the likes of Terence Rattigan, as in Harlequinade. But from March 2016 the season turns to a relatively new play from Sean Foley as The Painkiller heads to the stage.

The production, having previously appeared at Belfast’s Lyric Theatre, already has its fans, but this staging will introduce this update of Francis Veber’s Le Contrat to London theatre audiences with Branagh himself in a lead role alongside comic Rob Brydon.

The Painkiller introduces us to two very different men with two very different lives. But their current situations join them together like a jigsaw. Brian’s wife has recently left him and he has little going for him in his professional or social life, so when he finds himself alone in a hotel room his thoughts have turned to suicide. Meanwhile, Ralph, occupying the adjoining room, is much happier with his lot in life and has the career of a killer. During the course of the show we will see how these two scenarios will pan out.

Few people will require an introduction to Rob Brydon. The comic actor and stand-up has made regular appearances on our television screen for over a decade and continues to find new ways to make us laugh. His best known work has included the popular shows The Trip and its follow-up The Trip In Italy, plus everything from Marion & Geoff to Gavin & Stacey, Would I Lie To You? and Live At The Apollo, amongst others. As a stand-up he has also previously been seen in the West End when he brought his show to the Apollo Theatre in 2009.

But in 2016 he will ensure that he returns to the West End spotlight once again as he reprises his Lyric Belfast performance in The Painkiller alongside Branagh and under the direction of West End regular Sean Foley.

The show appears as part of Branagh’s season at the Garrick Theatre, which also includes productions of The Entertainer and The Winter’s Tale, from Saturday 5th March 2016.
