The Trafalgar Studios changes course from April as it welcomes a comedic play that has a stand-out reputation. Following the huge success that was the more serious Buried Child, we now turn our attentions to Christopher Hampton’s The Philanthropist, with various comic performers recruited to bring it to life under the direction of Simon Callow.

A day in the life of academics, The Philanthropist has been enjoyed in the capital on numerous occasions for nearly five decades, introducing new generations of theatregoers to a hilarious and outrageous comedy that has found fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

The story focuses on the characters of Philip, a philology professor, Donald, his best friend, Celia, his fiancé, Braham, a writer, Liz and Araminta. Beginning in a tutorial room and progressing to a dinner party hosted by Philip the show sees an evening descend into something unexpected, which they will have to face head on the next day. In the background we also learn of some major events happening in government, with great danger to the writers of the country, whilst they continue to live their lives in the shield of their world.

These characters will be portrayed by a range of well known actors, familiar to audiences for a range of television credits, including Matt Berry as Braham, Simon Bird as Philip, Lily Cole as Araminta, Charlotte Ritchie as Celia and Tom Rosenthal as Donald.

Matt Berry will be instantly recognisable to audiences for his numerous appearances on television comedy programmes, from The Mighty Boosh to Toast Of London, with House Of Fools and The IT Crowd along for the ride as well. As a performer he has a lot of fans and they will undoubtedly be thrilled to see his work at the Trafalgar Studios.

But for The Philanthropist he delves into a comedy that has stood the test of time and continues to find new fans, which it is bound to do once again with Simon Callow at the helm. The veteran performer is a West End regular, bringing his one-man show Being Shakespeare to the Trafalgar Studios, and is also recognisable from film and television work.

The Philanthropist runs at the Trafalgar Studios 1 from Thursday 20th April 2017 (previews from Monday 3rd April 2017).
