The Ruling Class

Jamie Lloyd’s Trafalgar Transformed season continues in Whitehall as The Ruling Class heads to Trafalgar Studios 1 with James McAvoy taking on a lead role. The production sees the Scottish film actor re-team with his Macbeth and Three Days Of Rain director to present a show that is likely to receive considerable attention throughout its run.

The Trafalgar Transformed season has seen a great deal of stand-out shows appear in the West End. James McAvoy appeared in Macbeth as part of the first season in 2013 and further productions included The Hothouse with John Simm, The Pride with Hayley Atwell, Richard III with Martin Freeman and East Is East with Jane Horrocks (the latter directed by  Sam Yates).

In The Ruling Class we meet the character of Jack, who is about to become involved in a power struggle as he joins society’s elite. Suffering from a mental disorder, Jack is not exactly the first choice to join this part of society, but the death of his father means that the title of 14th Earl of Gurnsey falls onto him, leaving it up to him to maintain the family’s name.

The play was first seen on the stage back in 1968 and later appeared at the Piccadilly Theatre the following year, whilst Peter Medak adapted it for the screen in 1972 with Peter O’Toole in the lead role. So it is a popular piece and one that has been enjoyed for many decades.

Now, however, it is the turn of James McAvoy to step into the lead role. The performer is well known worldwide for his film roles in the likes of X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Wanted, Filth and The Last King Of Scotland, among others, however he has also carved out a successful stage presence in recent years. His London roles have included Three Days Of Rain at the Apollo Theatre in 2009 and Macbeth at Trafalgar Studios 1 in 2013, both of which amassed a great deal of attention.

Audiences can pick up theatre tickets and see Peter Barnes’ The Ruling Class as it appears at Trafalgar Studios 1 from Tuesday 27th January 2015 (previews from Friday 16th January 2015).
