A Shakespearean classic in the West End, The Winter’s Tale continues to entertain audiences who continue to flock to the show over 400 years since it was first performed on the stage. It is a regular of the London theatre scene, appearing across the capital and also in the RSC’s venues in Stratford-upon-Avon, and now it is time for West End crowds to witness some talented performers and practitioners bring it back to life.
This time, however, there are even more reasons to pick up theatre tickets. Audiences will see Dame Judi Dench in the role of Paulina alongside Kenneth Branagh as Leontes. The show appears as part of Branagh’s season at the Garrick Theatre.
The Winter’s Tale focuses on the destruction of a family as Leontes finds himself ill at ease despite his amazing life around him. He seems to have everything a man could desire, but when jealousy sets in it no longer seems enough and he embarks on behaviour that creates barriers between himself and those around him. Fast forward some time and we see how people can make amends and his wife and daughter reunite with the man who threw everything away.
Described as a psychological drama, the show remains a well known piece from Shakespeare and stands up alongside many of the hits from the First Folio as one of his best known works. So its latest appearance in the West End, alongside Romeo & Juliet and The Entertainer as part of Branagh’s residency, should not be missed.
Kenneth Branagh has made a name for himself around the world thanks to his performances in numerous Shakespearean works, from Henry V to Much Ado About Nothing. Meanwhile, he has also made his way to the big screen and is known for appearances in the likes of Valkyrie, My Week With Marilyn, Wild Wild West and Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets, amongst others. In recent years, he has also lent his talents to the world of Marvel superheroes as he directed the blockbuster film Thor.
Audiences can see Dench and Branagh in The Winter’s Tale when it runs at the Garrick Theatre.from Saturday 17th October 2015.
