Every year the Chichester Festival Theatre presents a show that is successful enough to warrant a transfer to a West End stage. This year it is “Top Girls” from director Max Stafford-Clark that will be making this transition with former “Coronation Street” actor Suranne Jones in a lead role. The show will be arriving at Trafalgar Studios 1 from mid-August and features a stand-out cast alongside Jones in Lucy Briers, Laura Elphinstone, Stella Gonet, Lisa Kerr, Catherine McCormack and Olivia Poulet. So expect fans to be flocking to pick up Theatre Tickets with haste.
The characters in “Top Girls” are set for a memorable and interesting evening when Marlene (Jones) throws a dinner party. She is a hard-nosed businesswoman for the Top Girls Employment Agency and she is throwing the dinner party to celebrate her recent promotion. But the events of the evening conspire to go in unexpected directions as some powerful industry women are in attendance, making for some memorable situations. The play was first seen at the Royal Court Theatre in 1982 and comes first circle in 2011 as the show’s original director Max Stafford-Clark returns to the production.
Maxwell Stafford-Clark, in addition to “Top Girls” in the early 1980s, has directed a wide range of productions around the country for many decades, with work seen in Edinburgh (he is the former Associate Director of the Traverse Theatre in the city) as well as London. In the last decade he has been behind the likes of “The Big Fellah” for the Lyric Hammersmith, “King of Hearts” for the Hampstead Theatre and “The Overwhelming” for The National Theatre. Alongside Sonia Friedman he is the founder of the Out of Joint theatre company, which presented the latter three shows and “Top Girls”.
Meanwhile, actress Suranne Jones has various credits to her name as well on the back of a career that has included everything from “Coronation Street” to “Doctor Who”. In the case of the former she portrayed Karen McDonald in the long-running soap and in the case of the latter she recently appeared in the episode “The Doctor’s Wife”. Meanwhile, her other credits include “The Sarah Jane Adventures” and “Scott & Bailey”, among others.
London theatre audiences can catch “Top Girls” as it runs at Trafalgar Studios 1 from Tuesday 16th August 2011 (previews from Friday 5th August 2011) to Saturday 15th October 2011.
