There is always great celebration when Twelfth Night is performed in the capital and this is no different in 2017 as the Olivier National Theatre stages this new production with Tamsin Greig in the role of housekeeper Malvolia. It will be a great way to experience this classic Shakespearean text.
Twelfth Night, like many of the Bard’s pieces, was penned at the start of the 17th century and focuses on his common theme of mistaken identity. On this occasion this theme is played out as Viola and her brother Sebastian are out at sea, only to become shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria. With her brother feared dead Viola disguises herself as a boy called Cesario and works for the Duke of Orsino, relaying messages from him to his love Lady Olivia, who herself has fallen for the boy she believes is Cesario. It is a chaotic and memorable story that has stood the test of time and continues to find new admirers.
Tamsin Greig needs little introduction, having made a name for herself on the stage and screen. Many will know her for her work in television comedy, taking on major roles in shows like Black Books, Green Wing and Episodes. But she has also had success in the West End and in recent years she has appeared in Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown at the Playhouse Theatre and Little Dog Laughed at the Garrick Theatre.
She is directed in Twelfth Night by the acclaimed Simon Godwin, who has also had success with various London shows and further productions around the United Kingdom, including productions at London’s Royal Court Theatre and Bristol’s Old Vic.
Twelfth Night is staged at the Olivier National Theatre in 2017.
