There was much fanfare as it was announced that Stephen Fry would be taking on the role of Malvolio in “Twelfth Night” at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, but the story thickens as it is revealed that this production will also land in the West End for a run at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue. The show was originally announced for the Globe as part of the venue’s “The Play’s the Thing” season, which also includes the likes of “Richard III” and “The Taming of the Shrew”.
The production will also feature Mark Rylance in the role of Olivia, Samuel Barnett as Sebastian and Johnny Flynn portrays Viola, whilst directing duties fall upon Tim Carroll.
“Twelfth Night” is a well known play by William Shakespeare and like many of the Bard’s pieces it was penned at the start of the 17th century whilst focuses on his common theme of mistaken identity. On this occasion this theme is played out as Viola and her brother Sebastian are out at sea, only to become shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria. With her brother feared dead she disguises herself as a boy called Cesario and works for the Duke of Orsino, relaying messages from him to his love Lady Olivia, who herself has fallen for the boy she believes is Cesario.
Stephen Fry is a well known British actor, comedian, presenter and Twitter user whose career has made him into a national treasure.
