Two Into One

Ray Cooney’s 1984 play Two Into Ones heads to the Menier Chocolate Factory in London with West End star Josefina Gabrielle among the cast members. The political farce has been seen in the capital before but on this occasion audiences will have the opportunity of witnessing the mentioned Gabriella, plus Michael Praed, Jean Fergusson, Jeffrey Holland, Nick Wilton, Kathryn Rooney and Tom Golding in lead roles.

This will also be an opportunity to delve into the work of Cooney, who not only wrote the play back in the 1980s but also directs the production as it returns to London.

The plot centres on the character of George Pigden, a government aide whose work means that he has to book a hotel room for MP Richard Willey and his mistress. But, this being a famous farce, this is not going to go according to plan; Pigden is not exactly a good man for the job and the mistakes he makes could have unnecessary and unwanted consequences.

The play was penned in the early 1980s and premiered at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London’s West End in 1984. Back then the cast included the likes of Donald Sinden, among others. It was one of many success stories for the venue under the hands of Cooney, who had set up the Theatre of Comedy Company the year before, which eventually purchased the venue on the back of the play’s success. Many well known shows, with high profile actors like Anthony Hopkins and Peter O’Toole appeared at the venue under the Theatre of Comedy Company.

Cooney himself has been behind a wealth of shows over the years, with many West End success stories. In addition to Two Into One he has also been behind Run For Your Wife – perhaps his best known work – as well as Not Now, Darling and It Runs In The Family, among others.

Two Into One is one of many shows to introduce politics to a London stage, though in this case the scandals in politics is a more apt description, and others include The Act at Trafalgar Studios 2 and The Duck House at the Harold Pinter Theatre, with Handbagged set to follow the latter in April.

Two Into One, meanwhile, runs at the Menier Chocolate Factory from Saturday 8th March 2014.
