This September, the St James Theatre welcomes Kiev’s National Academic Theatre of Russian Drama as part of a season that celebrates the culture of Ukraine. The season also sees the National Theatre of Kiev present shows with the same purpose and allows audiences in London the opportunity to explore Ukrainian culture through the eyes of authentic theatre from the region.

Early in September the season presents Ward Of The Manor, a new interpretation of Ivan Turgenev’s Fortune’s Fool. It is performed in Russian with an English live-dub.

The show features the return of Olga Korina to her family’s country estate, where she meets Vasilii Kuzovkin, the title’s ward of the manor. A party is thrown for Korina and her new husband Pavel Yeletsky and it is during this celebration that Kuzovkin is led to present secrets that will have lasting consequences.

The original Fortune’s Fool is a comedic play by Ivan Turgenev that has been staged on numerous occasions since it was first presented in the 1840s, with numerous versions appearing on Broadway and in London. This version, however, is a new one that is staged to honour the memory of Georgy Tovstonogov, the Russian theatre director who died in 1989 and was considered one of the greats of the European stage.

The Ukrainian season at the St James Theatre also includes two shows inspired by Anton Chekhov – Life’s Little Nothings, which is based on his short stories, and My Mocking Happiness, based on his correspondence. It also includes the Ukrainian version of the legendary Don Juan.

Ward Of The Manor runs at the venue from Tuesday 8th September 2015.
