The Garrick Theatre welcomes back Maureen Lipman and others in a brand new staging of J B Priestley’s beloved comedy “When We Are Married”, the story of an unexpected surprise awaiting a series of couples about to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. In addition to the West End regular Lipman, the cast also includes the likes of Rosemary Ashe, Susie Blake, David Horovitch and Roy Hudd, amongst others, and it is certain to be a successful staging of a J B Priestley classic.
In fact, London has been no stranger to his shows in recent years, having provided stages for productions of “Time and the Conways” at the National and “An Inspector Calls” at the Wyndham’s Theatre in 2009 and 2010 respectively. The playwright had a long and successful career, putting together plays and various books to long-lasting acclaim, with shows often looking into the realities of time, sometimes with mysterious characters.
With “When We Are Married” he presents a show in which comedy ensues following a surprising revelation. The year is 1908 and the location is a local community in West Yorkshire, where three couples are preparing to celebrate 25 years of marriage. They remember the special day fondly, with the three pairs all sharing a church, the day and the vicar, before learning the ins and outs of marriage at the same time. But when they discover that their vicar was not licensed, it turns their proud lives upside down, forcing them to re-evaluate their standing within the community, as they are not as respectable as they first thought.
Maureen Lipman returns to the stage of the Garrick following her appearance in “A Little Night Music” in 2009, Trevor Nunn’s successful Menier Chocolate Factor-transfer. She has enjoyed a long and prestigious career as the proud recipient of a Laurence Olivier Award-nomination for “A Little Night Music”, with other credits that include the “Glorious!” at the Duchess Theatre and movies such as “The Pianist”.
Meanwhile her co-stars range from Laurence Olivier Award-nominated actress Rosemary Ashe to London regular Roy Hudd, plus David Horovitch, who appeared in “Life is a Dream” at the Donmar Warehouse in 2009.
When We Are Married is at the Garrick Theatre from Wednesday 27th October 2010 (previews from Tuesday 19th October 2010) to Saturday 26th February 2011.
