Musically this is a very strong Wozzeck.
The orchestra, under Gardiner play as if their lives depend upon it and the singers inhabit their roles well.
While there are some visually arresting aspects to the production, it generally feels over-cluttered and inadvertently blurs some of the all important hierachies.
The opening scene with the captain is a case in point.
Well worth seeing though, and the awe inspiring cut from the terrifying orchestral unison into the soldier playing the battered upright piano with a gas mask on is certainly one of the more succesful aspects of the production.
