The BBC Philharmonic is based in Manchester and is one of the finest orchestras in the UK. They perform around 18 concerts a year at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and record a series of concerts and programmes for BBC Radio 3.
They have established a reputation for quality, professionalism and artistry with a wide ranging repertoire. In recent years they in conjunction with the Royal Northern College of Music have worked with many of the world’s greatest composer. These include Arnold, Birtwistle and Turnage. They have also worked alongside a variety of top class soloists which include Yo Yo Ma, Anna Netrebko and Renee Fleming.
This concert at the Victoria Hall in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent is a dedication to the works of Edward Elgar. He is known for his monumental ‘Enigma Variations’ as well as the ever popular ‘Pomp and Circumstance Marches’. His Pomp and Circumstance March
No 1 Land of Hope and Glory is a regular favourite at the Last Night of the Proms event.
The orchestra is conducted by Pietari Inkinen with soloist Mikhail Ovrutsky. The programme includes the following:
- Elgar: Violin Concerto
- Sibelius: Symphony No. 5
- Mozart: Overture – Marriage of Figaro
The BBC Philharmonic opens for one night only on the 1st May 2009.
