1984 Returns to the Playhouse Theatre
The Production Returns in June Following Its Run at the Same Venue Last Year
It was only recently announced that last year’s hit West End show Cats will be returning later this year and now another of 2014’s popular productions has been announced as following in its footsteps.
1984, the Headlong Theatre Company co-production based on the popular George Orwell novel, will be returning to the Playhouse Theatre this June, in the process reminding audiences of what made it such a hit when it played there last summer. Casting has not yet been confirmed.
The production received particular attention not just because it was based on an iconic book but because it shone a new light on Orwell’s work. It brought the familiar story to life, but it added new twists by utilising the appendices of the book.
The original story, of course, takes us to Airstrip One, which is actually London in a future superstate known by the name Oceania. Set in the aftermath of a global war, which has split the world into three such superstates, we meet the character of Winston Smith, who lives in this dystopian world and works for the Ministry of Truth. But after meeting a woman he decides that he is to rebel against the system and this puts him at odds with the figurehead known as Big Brother and the consequences for him will be shocking.
The show is a co-production between the Headlong Theatre Company, the Nottingham Playhouse and the Almeida Theatre and is has been penned by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, the former being the previous Artistic Director of Headlong. He is also responsible for directing the likes of Romeo & Juliet for the company and presenting other hits around the country like The Alchemist at the Liverpool Playhouse.
Meanwhile, the Headlong Theatre Company has found success with other west end shows like The Nether at the Duke of York’s Theatre, American Psycho at the Almeida Theatre and Chimerica at the Harold Pinter Theatre.
1984 returns to the Playhouse Theatre from Thursday 18th June 2015 (previews from Friday 12th June 2015) to Saturday 5th September 2015.
