5 Reasons Why You'll Fall Head Over Heels for Kinky Boots

Thursday, 10th Sep 2015

Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper Kinky Boots is kicking up a storm in the West End and drawing in some rave reviews from critics as well as the public. So if you’re wondering why London is looking rather kinky these days, here are 5 reasons why this glorious musical is simply a must see.

1. It’s based on a true story

Following the success of the 2005 film of the same name, Kinky Boots the musical is based on a true story of an English shoe factory based in Northampton. Charlie Price is an aspiring working-class businessman on the hunt for success after inheriting his father’s factory. In a flamboyant pursuit to save the business from sure bankruptcy he stumbles across Soho cross-dressing drag queen Lola, and together they embark on a journey that will see them change the face of gender footwear for years to come.

2. Cyndi Lauper

Need we say more? After 30 years of success in the music industry the Grammy award-winning pop icon is the creative musical force behind the shows catchy songs. She joins two-time Tony award-winner Jerry Mitchell who directed and choreographed, drawing upon his experience working on other major film-to-musical adaptions Legally Blonde and Hairspray. Together they bring Harvey Fierstein’s book to life in the strikingly stand-out production.

3. It was a Broadway Hit

After huge success on Broadway the musical has finally made its way across the Atlantic to London’s West End. During its opening year in the US it took home 6 Tony Awards, including the title of Best New Musical. Now in the UK the cast have been getting first hand lessons from Tricker’s employees (the shoe factory where the movie was filmed) to help them get to better grips with the craft and local accent.

4. It will make you feel good

Kinky Boots is a story of acceptance with a lot of fun and fab thrown into the mix. However no matter how catchy the score, you can’t help but feel touched by Charlie and Lola’s struggle of making their father’s proud.

5. Shoes…and lots of them!

You can’t go wrong with 6 inch tall high heels and thigh-high, scarlet snakeskin boots taking centre stage. In the words of Killian Donnelly who plays factory boss Charlie, they will make you feel ‘fabulous!’
