A Time To Celebrate For Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
With National Chocolate Week off to a sweet start it seems only fitting to celebrate the fact that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has a special anniversary of its own coming up. On the eve of the 12th of October 2015 the show will be marking its 1,000th performance at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane.
Since first opening in June 2013 the musical, directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes, has won a number of awards including two Olivier Awards in April 2014 for Best Lighting Design and Best Costume Design. Seen by more than 1.6 million people it’s also broken records at its current home on Drury Lane.
Based on the famously dark tale by Roald Dahl about a young boy named Charlie who wins a golden ticket to go on a once in a lifetime visit to the magical world within the walls of the Wonka Chocolate Factory. Inside, along with 5 other lucky winners he is joined by Willy Wonka (played by award-winning actor Jonathan Slinger) for an experience he’ll never forget.
The story is brought to life on stage by award-winning playwright David Greig with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman. The talented creative team also features choreography by Peter Darling and eye-catching set and costume designs by Mark Thompson.
