Alex Gaumond in We Will Rock You at the Dominion Theatre
Touring Star Joins the West End Version From August Alongside Returning Mazz Murray
“We Will Rock You” is arguably one of the most popular shows still running in the West End, though it has not been in the news since its booking extension back in March following the Laurence Olivier Awards, and returns to the spotlight with some casting announcements this week. The production is enjoying the last year of its first decade in the capital (it opened at the Dominion Theatre in May 2002) and has now announced that Alex Gaumond will be taking on the role of Galileo from the summer, with Mazz Murray returning briefly to the role of Killer Queen in August.
Alex Gaumond is a well known performer in West End and touring musicals and previously appeared in the touring production of “We Will Rock You” in the role of Galileo. His other credits include the Laurence Olivier Award-winning production of “Legally Blonde the Musical” at the Savoy Theatre, “Desperately Seeking Susan” at the Novello Theatre, “Sunday in the Park with George” at the Wyndham’s Theatre and “Scrooge” at the London Palladium. He will portray Galileo from Monday 8th August 2011 to January 2012.
Meanwhile, Mazz Murray returns to the role of Killer Queen from Monday 8th August 2011 to Saturday 20th August 2011. Murray previously portrayed the role until last year when she left on maternity leave and her run this summer will be her farewell to the production.
“We Will Rock You” tells of a future Earth 300 years from now when globalisation is complete and the world is known as Planet Mall, with the evil Globalsoft Corporation (headed by the Killer Queen) in charge. They ban musical expression and enforce other tyrannical rules and this forces a team of freedom fighters – known as the Bohemians – to return the world to the time of the Rhapsody. Songs in the musical include “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “Another One Bites The Dust”, “I Want To Break Free” and “We Will Rock You”, among others.
The tenth anniversary of the show will ensure that there will be no let-ups in the West End celebrations in 2012. This year sees “The Phantom of the Opera” celebrate its 25th birthday, whilst “Les Miserables” hit the same milestone last year.
“We Will Rock You” continues at the Dominion Theatre and is currently booking until Saturday 22nd October 2011.
