Alexander Hanson and Charlotte Spencer in Stephen Ward at the Aldwych Theatre
Charlotte Blackledge and Anthony Calf Also Among the Cast List for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s New Musical
Earlier this year it was revealed that Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest musical would be Stephen Ward, aiming to recount the events surrounding the Profumo Scandal during Harold Macmillan’s government in the 1960s, and now a casting announcement has emerged.
Alexander Hanson will take on the title role in the upcoming production with Charlotte Spence as alleged Soviet spy Christine Keeler, Charlotte Blackledge as Mandy Rice Davies, Anthony Calf as Lord Astor and Daniel Flynn as John Profumo.
Stephen Ward takes us back to the 1960s and introduces us to the title character – Stephen Ward - an osteopath that introduced John Profumo – then the Secretary of War – to Christine Keeler, an alleged Soviet Spy. Profumo’s affair with Keeler whilst married caused a controversy that only got worse when he lied about it in the House of Commons. It was an incident that remains a huge political scandal to this day and dealt a damaging hand to Harold Macmillan’s government of the time.
Stephen Ward, as the name suggests, will focus on the osteopath’s role in the scandal, giving the well known political controversy a new place in the limelight and providing audiences with theatre tickets with a new angle on it.
Alexander Hanson is a seasoned performer in the West End and is also recognisable from his television work. His credits over the years have included The Sound Of Music at the London Palladium, We Will Rock You at the Dominion Theatre and The Villain’s Opera at the National Theatre, with television and film roles like Lewis, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Kidulthood.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Spencer has appeared in Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre, plus television shows like Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps and the Johnny Depp movie Dark Shadows.
The new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, set to be directed by Richard Eyre, will also feature Joanna Riding, Martin Callaghan, Ricardo Coke Thomas, Ian Conningham, Kate Coyston, Jason Denton, Julian Forsyth, Amy Griffiths, Chris Howell, Paul Kemble, Emma Kate Nelson, Wayne Robinson, Carl Sanderson, Emily Squibb, John Stacey, Helen Ternent and Tim Walton.
Stephen Ward runs at the Aldwych Theatre from Thursday 19th December 2013 (with previews beginning on Tuesday 3rd December 2013) and is initially booking to Saturday 1st March 2014.
