The Former Doctor Who Actor Joining the Movie-Turned Stage Musical in the West End

Once has been running at the Phoenix Theatre since March 2013 and has proven a hit with audiences in the capital, who have flocked to see the story of an Irish street performer and Czech immigrant bond through their love of music. However, the producers of the show have landed a casting coup that will ensure audiences continue to pick up theatre tickets for the production well into the future.

The lead role of Guy will be played by Doctor Who actor Arthur Darvill from March and not only will this entice fans of the popular BBC science fiction show it will also undoubtedly attract those curious about his portrayal thanks to his previous starring role in the Broadway production.

Once is set in Dublin and follows the mentioned Irish street performer and Czech immigrant as they meet on the street and a relationship unfolds. But this is a unique relationship with a new spin, making Once a show that stands out amongst west end shows.

It also features songs plucked from the movie of the same name, including When Your Mind’s Made Up, Falling Slowly and Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy, among others. These tracks were, in part, penned by Glen Hasgard, the actor who played Guy on the big screen.

Arthur Darvill is best known for playing Rory Williams in Doctor Who, a companion of the Eleventh Doctor played by Matt Smith. His other credits include the series Broadchurch and movies such as Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and Robin Hood. He is also well known for his stage work, which has not only seen him appear in Once on Broadway, but also in Our Boys at the Duchess Theatre in 2012, Doctor Faustus at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in 2011, Swimming With Sharks at the Vaudeville Theatre in 2007 and Terre Haute at the Trafalgar Studios in 2006.

This production is one of many in the capital with its origins on the big screen, with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Billy Elliot The Musical amongst the others. Recently, plans were also revealed for a Back To The Future musical in the West End.

Once is currently booking at the Phoenix Theatre until Saturday 4th July 2015. Arthur Darvill portrays Guy from Monday 17th March 2014.
