Beverley Knight in The Bodyguard at the Adelphi Theatre
Singer Replacing Heather Headley in the Lead Role whilst Tristan Gemmill Replaces Lloyd Owen from September 2013
A high profile casting announcement emerges for the popular production of The Bodyguard at the Adelphi Theatre. The lead role of Rachel Marron, famously portrayed by Whitney Houston in the hit movie, will be portrayed by the British singer Beverley Knight from September 2013. She replaces the outgoing Heather Headley, who has been in the role since the show opened last year, though Gloria Onitiri is set to play the part from August until Knight steps in.
Bodyguard Frank Farmer, who is currently portrayed by Owen Lloyd, is also to be granted a new lead actor as Tristan Gemmill will step up at the same time. The part was portrayed by Kevin Costner in the movie version.
The Bodyguard introduces those with theatre tickets to the characters Rachel Marron and Frank Farmer, the former a famous singer and the latter her bodyguard assigned to protect her from a stalker. Over time a relationship develops between the two and time will tell how this affects his ability to carry out his job properly.
The movie was a huge hit when it was released in the 1990s and it spawned a hit song in the form of Whitney Houston’s cover of I Will Always Love You. Other songs to appear in the musical version include Houston’s hits I Wanna Dance With Somebody and All The Man That I Need, among others.
Beverley Knight is a celebrated performer whose career kicked off in the mid-1990s with the album The B-Funk and songs like Down For The One. During her career she has released follow-up albums such as Prodigal Sister in 1998, Who I Am in 2002, Affirmation in 2004, Music City Soul in 2007, 100% in 2009 and Soul UK in 2011, with songs like Greatest Day and Should Woulda Coulda gaining plenty of airplay on radio stations. So her casting as Rachel Marron is fitting and also guaranteed to drum up a lot of publicity for the ongoing production in the West End.
The Bodyguard is one of many adaptations of movies in the West End, with others like The Lion King and Billy Elliot also popular. The show continues at the Adelphi Theatre, with the new cast (which also includes Richard Lloyd King, Stephen Marcus, Dominic Taylor, Michael Rouse and Stuart Reid) taking over on 9th September 2013, and is currently booking to Saturday 28th September 2013.
