Bridget Jones the Musical Update
Adelphi Theatre One of Two Possible Venues Cited for the Upcoming Musical Adaptation in the West End.
Last year it was revealed that another famous movie would be granted a musical adaptation in the capital, joining other well known shows like “Ghost The Musical”, “Billy Elliot the Musical” and “Legally Blonde the Musical”, among others. It will take the form of a musical adaptation of “Bridget Jones’s Diary”, which will undoubtedly attract the attention of theatregoers nationwide when it finally arrives in the West End. Since news first emerged of the project it has been quiet for almost a year but now news emerges concerning the production thanks to Baz Bamigboye in the Daily Mail.
According the show business columnist “Bridget Jones’s Diary” could be coming to either the Adelphi Theatre – currently the home to “Love Never Dies” until late August and the future home of “One Man, Two Guvnors” – or another unnamed location in 2012.
“Bridget Jones’s Diary” is, of course, also known as a high profile novel by Helen Fielding from which the movie is based (though this is technically true of another West End show based on a movie – “Shrek The Musical” – as well) but its movie version raised its profile around the world. On the big screen Renée Zellweger brought the title character to life alongside a cast that included Hugh Grant and Colin Firth.
The plot chronicles the events of one year in the life of Bridget Jones, with her exploits in love the main focus as she attempts to decide between two men in her life – Daniel Cleaver or Mark Darcy. The musical version is set to mirror this plot and Sheridan Smith is set to play the title role when it heads to the stage (she has been work shopping the project alongside other actors).
The musical would not need a high profile name to attract the crowds of course – with the name “Bridget Jones” surely enough to have people clamouring for Theatre Tickets – but the casting of Smith is likely to raise its stakes even higher. The actress recently earned a Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in “Legally Blonde the Musical”, which is still at the Savoy Theatre with Carley Stenson in her role.
“Bridget Jones’s Diary” is set to open in the West End in 2012, with the Adelphi Theatre a possible home.
