Cherry Jones in The Glass Menagerie at the Duke of York’s Theatre
If you have plans to go to the Duke of York’s Theatre in the months ahead then it will be to see the Ken Stott-Reece Shearsmith match-up The Dresser, which runs there until January. Ronald Harwood’s emotional play appears at the venue under the direction of Sean Foley following a recent tour around the United Kingdom.
But once that show closes its doors another will take its place and today we get word that it will take the form of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. The production marks the first time it has been seen in the West End for some time, though it did appear at the Young Vic Theatre in 2010, and will mark the latest occasion for Theatreland audiences to witness the work of Williams.
The cast has also been confirmed for the production, with Cherry Jones taking on the role of Amanda Wingfield alongside Michael Esper as Tom, Kate O’Flynn as Laura and Brian J Smith as the Gentleman Caller, Jim. Meanwhile John Tiffany directs, fresh off his duties helming Harry Potter And The Cursed Child: Parts One And Two.
The Glass Menagerie focuses on the family of Amanda and her children Tom and Laura, the former of which, Tom, narrates the proceedings from the future whilst the latter is beset with debilitating shyness. Tasked with finding a suitor for Laura, Tom introduces the ‘Gentleman Caller’ Jim to his family for a particular evening and watches as the night takes its course. Time will tell if this will fulfil Amanda’s wishes or tear the family apart.
With Cherry Jones as Amanda, audiences will be presented with the same experience that American audiences enjoyed when this production was seen on Broadway. She talented and experienced American actor has earned numerous Tony Awards during an illustrious career and has appeared in a wealth of shows on the other side of the Atlantic. Theatregoers might also recognise her from screen roles that include 11.22.63 and 24.
The Glass Menagerie is at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Thursday 2nd February 2017 (previews from Thursday 26th January 2017) to Saturday 29th April 2017.
