Chicago The Musical Set to Close at the Garrick Theatre in September

The Closure Will Bring to an End 15 Years of Entertainment in the Capital

Surprising news emerges from the Garrick Theatre today as it is announced that “Chicago the Musical”, which transferred to the venue last year following many years at the Cambridge Theatre, will be closing its doors this September.

It brings to an end 15 years in the West End, which has seen the production appear at the Adelphi Theatre from 1997, then the Cambridge from 2006 and then, following the opening of “Matilda The Musical” at that venue last year, the Garrick Theatre.

Penned as a play in the 1920s by Maurine Dallas Watkins, “Chicago the Musical” is set in that decade during a time in which people were captivated by the concept of the ‘celebrity criminal’. As such we meet Roxie Hart, who is thrown into prison for the murder of her husband and finds herself in the spotlight for reasons that she never dreamed. On the inside she meets the sister-killing Vaudevillian performer Velma Kelly and the pair decide to follow their dreams for a life under big lights, so they employ the sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn and make their bids for freedom.

There is not yet any word on the show that will be replacing it at the Garrick Theatre, nor is there any word what will happen to the production after it ends in the West End. It is unlikely that they are going to be finding a new home at the moment, but that does not rule out tours and other versions of the show from appearing somewhere. It is also unlikely that we have seen the last of “Chicago the Musical” in the West End as it has been a popular production that is likely to be revived in the future. After all, the original Broadway version of the show opened back in the 1970s.

Various shows will be closing as the year heads into its second half, with perhaps the best known being “Ghost The Musical”, which closes to make way for “Viva Forever” at the Piccadilly Theatre, and “The Wizard Of Oz”, which closes at the London Palladium.

“Chicago the Musical” is at the Garrick Theatre and is booking until its final performance on Saturday 1st September 2012.
