This version of the opera is from the Scottish opera director David McVicar, who has been behind a host of successful productions across the country. It is the story of Faust, who makes a deal with Mephistopheles (a representative of the devil), an as a result gains various powers. But at the end of the agreed term Faust’s soul will belong to the devil.
The play “Doctor Faustus” – based on the same legend – is due to appear this year at Shakespeare’s Globe, whilst this version appears as part of ROH Live on Wednesday 28th September 2011.

The Royal Ballet Live’s “Romeo & Juliet” from Kenneth MacMillan follows on Thursday 22nd March 2012, with “Rigoletto” as part of the Royal Opera Live next up on Thursday 17th April 2012 and “La fille mal gardée” as part of the Royal Ballet Live on Wednesday 16th May 2012.
“La fille mal gardée” is a well known comic ballet from Jean Dauberval and is based on the painting “La réprimande/Une jeune fille querellée par sa mere” by Pierre-Antoine Baudouin.
