David Shannon and More Cast in Matilda The Musical at the Cambridge Theatre

Matilda the Musical - Cambridge Theatre

Now that we are in the second half of summer the West End’s biggest shows have been revealing the line-up changes that will take them into the autumn. The Phantom of the Opera has been one of them, announcing new cast members joining the production in September, and now Matilda the Musical is getting in on the action.

The acclaimed musical will be adding David Shannon to the list of names that have portrayed Miss Trunchbull when he takes on the part on 12th September, whilst names like Gina Beck, Tom Edden and Marianne Benedict are also added to the cast.

Matilda is the famous Roald Dahl story about a precocious young girl with extraordinary talent for putting people in their place, which is only amplified when she develops telekinetic powers.

The novel has been granted many iterations over the years, with a 90s film version also drawing the fans. This stage production, however, has been a triumph ever since it was first produced at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon prior to its West End arrival. Naturally, Olivier Awards followed and a Broadway production also opened across the Atlantic.

So with that background David Shannon and company have big shoes to fill when they inhabit their new roles. But then Shannon is no stranger to such feats as he has appeared in a wealth of west end shows over the years, including The Phantom Of The Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Les Misérables at the Queen’s Theatre, Miss Saigon at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and Whistle Down The Wind at the Aldwych Theatre, amongst many others.

But now he takes on the role of Miss Trunchbull, a part that has also been played by Bertie Carvel, David Leonard and Craige Else, the latter of whom Shannon replaces in September.

Further cast members will include Richard Astbury, Keisha Amponsa Banson, David Birch, Maria Graciano, Karina Hind, Peter Houston, Katie Lee, Vicki Lee Taylor, Kris Manuel, Bryan Mottram, Tom Muggeridge, Emma Robotham-Hunt, Simon Shorten, Biancha Szynal, Callum Train and Robert Tregoning.

Matilda The Musical is currently booking at the Cambridge Theatre for performances up to Sunday 27th May 2018.
