Deaf actor takes to the West End stage
A deaf actor has been cast in the lead role of a play in the West End for the first time.
Jacob Casselden has been cast in the lead role of Billy in Nina Raine's new play Tribes, which is being performed at London's Royal Court Theatre.
The play, which explores deafness, was praised by Channel 4 News culture editor Matthew Cain, who noted the other musicians and dancers who have taken the stage before in shows.
"Jacob's performance is extremely accomplished and its authenticity prompts the audience to question not just our attitudes to deafness but the very basis of the way we communicate with each other," said Mr Cain.
The production is set to run at the theatre until November 13th 2010, with Harry Treadaway and Kika Markham also appearing in the show.
Special British Sign Language interpreted and captioned performances are due to take place in both October and November.
