Derek Jacobi in Romeo & Juliet at the Garrick Theatre
Acclaimed Actor Joins Lily James and Richard Madden in Kenneth Branagh’s Upcoming Production as Part of Anticipated Season
Last month there was great anticipation when news emerged of the upcoming season at the Garrick Theatre, which is set to see the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company present a series of high profile plays with Branagh himself starring and directing. Amongst them is Romeo & Juliet, William Shakespeare’s classic tragic romance, and it is set to star Lily James and Richard Madden from Branagh’s very own film version of Cinderella (with Branagh directing rather than starring).
Now another member of the Cinderella cast has been revealed as part of the production as Derek Jacobi steps into the role of Mercutio.
Arguably one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, Romeo & Juliet has a story known by audiences all over the world. It takes us to fair Verona, where we meet the warring families of the Montagues and Capulets, and amongst the drama we find Romeo and Juliet, from opposing families but united in love. As these star-crossed lovers attempt to find a way to be together the show heads towards its famous and tragic ending.
It was written at the end of the 16th century and has been performed regularly all over the world ever since.
Though Jacobi will be recognisable to many with theatre tickets thanks to his screen work, which includes everything from classic series I, Claudius, to more recent show Last Tango In Halifax and films such as The King’s Speech, he has also enjoyed a successful stage career. His recent credits include King Lear at the Donmar Warehouse and Twelfth Night at the Wyndham’s Theatre, the latter of which earned him the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor, whilst he has also appeared in everything from Cyrano De Bergerac to Antony And Cleopatra.
As well as Romeo & Juliet, the upcoming residency for Kenneth Branagh at the Garrick Theatre also includes Shakespearean production The Winter’s Tale, plus The Painkiller, Harlequinade and The Entertainer with names like Judi Dench and Rob Brydon recruited for certain shows alongside Branagh himself.
Romeo & Juliet is at the Garrick Theatre from Wednesday 25th May 2016 (previews from Thursday 12th May 2016) to Saturday 13th August 2016.
