Emi Wokoma as Tina Turner in Soul Sister at the Savoy Theatre
The Hackney Empire Theatre Production Headed to the West End in the Summer with Christ Tummings as Ike Turner
This month news stories regarding the Savoy Theatre have largely been concerned with the recently-announced “Cabaret” with Will Young and Michelle Ryan, which is set to open in October. However, as the current production – “The Sunshine Boys” - ends in July this leaves the Savoy empty during August and September.
Step in “Soul Sister”, a new musical that recently appeared at the Hackney Empire Theatre in the East of London, which is set to plug this gap with a run from late August to late September. It stars Emi Wokoma as Tina Turner and Chris Tummings as Ike Turner.
Emi Wokoma has appeared at the Savoy Theatre before when the production of “Porgy and Bess” arrived there under the direction of Trevor Nunn, whilst her other credits include “Dancing in the Streets” and the Nitro Theatre Company’s “Mass Carib”. Meanwhile, on television, her work has included the likes of “Casualty”, “EastEnders” and “Trexx and Flipside”, all from 2008 onwards.
Meanwhile, co-star Chris Tummings has also appeared on the London stage before, in “The Buddy Holly Story” at the Duchess Theatre, “The Big Life” at the Apollo Theatre and “Fabulation” at the Tricycle Theatre, whilst his television work has included “Holby City” and “The Bill”.
“Soul Sister” focuses on Tina Turner and Ike Turner from the first time that they meet to their time as a famous couple, as a result allowing audiences an insight into their up-and-down relationship. As a result the story chronicles the times in the 1960s, 1970s and beyond as Tina Turner emerges as a global star in her own right.
Along the way the musical dishes out various hit songs from her back catalogue, including “Respec”, “Simply The Best”, “Private Dancer” and “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, among others.
The production is directed by Pete Brooks and Bob Eaton with Bill Kenwright and John Miller producing in the West End. The concept was devised by Brooks and Miller.
“Soul Sister” will play at the Savoy Theatre from Thursday 23rd August 2012 (previews from Monday 20th August 2012) to Saturday 29th September 2012.
