Gavin Lee in Top Hat at the Aldwych Theatre
Tom Chambers Set to Step Down from the Role of Jerry Travers in February 2013
Back in May, audiences in the West End were treated to a new show at the Aldwych Theatre in the form of “Top Hat”, with Tom Chambers taking on the lead role of Jerry Travers and Summer Trallen taking on the role of Dale Tremont. However, as the show continues into the New Year it has been revealed that casting changes are to take place. From February these mentioned parts will be played by Gavin Lee and Charlotte Gooch.
In “Top Hat”, directed by Matthew White, with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin and with Matthew White and Howard Jacques adapting, we are introduced to the famous Jerry Travers, an American tap dancer, who is set to appear in a West End show in London and so makes his way across the Atlantic before promptly falls for the beautiful Dale Tremont. But with a case of mistaken identity marring his chances of landing the girl of his dreams he may have a lot to accomplish to win her heart, forcing him to follow her across Europe.
Gavin Lee has appeared in shows on both sides of the Atlantic, with the Broadway version of “Mary Poppins” perhaps ones of his best known roles. In the West End he has been recognised with award nominations and praise from audiences as he has been seen in “Contact” at the Queen’s Theatre, “DuBarry Was a Lady” at Her Majesty’s Theatre and “Peggy Sue Got Married” at the Shaftesbury Theatre. His performance in “Mary Poppins” was also originated in the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre in 2004.
Another claim to fame for Lee is the occasion in which he performed part of “Mary Poppins” for US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in 2010.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Gooch has also appeared in numerous shows, with many UK touring musicals under her belt.
With the casting changes taking effect on Tuesday 5th February 2013, “Top Hat” can still be seen by London theatre audiences right up until the end of its current booking period on Saturday 28th September 2013.
