Greta Scacchi & Anita Dobson as Bette & Joan at the Arts Theatre
Well Known Actresses Portraying Screen Rivals Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in the London Venue
The Arts Theatre, currently the home of musical "Woody Sez” until the beginning of April, has just revealed the show that will take it from early May to late June: Bette and Joan, a production that will focus on the screen icons Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. And along with this news comes the names of the two actresses set to portray them onstage – Greta Scacchi, star of “Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny”, and Anita Dobson, famous for her role in “EastEnders”.
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were both well known screen icons, divas and, due to their profession, rivals. They met on the set of the movie “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” from 1962 – based on the novel of the same name – and there have since been reports of intense fighting between the two actresses. Though their careers had overlapped before – Davis refused a part in “Mildred Pierce” in 1945 and Crawford would go on to win an Academy Award for the role – it was this movie, which appeared at a low-point in their respective careers, which is the focus of “Bette & Joan”.
Greta Scacchi is an actress whose work has included European and American films and movies, with credits such as “Das Zweite Gesicht (The Second Face)”, “Presumed Innocent” and “The Country Life”. She won an Emmy for her appearance in “Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny”, whilst her more recent credits include “Brideshead Revisited”, “The Trojan Horse” and “Ways to Live Forever”.
Meanwhile, Anita Dobson will be best known to London theatre audience members for her portrayal of Angie in “EastEnders” and she appeared in the highest rated episode of any other soap in the UK on Christmas 1986. Her other credits include “Casualty”, “Holby City”, “Hotel Babylon” and “Doctor Who”, whilst her theatre credits include “Frozen” at the Cottesloe National Theatre and “Hamlet” at the Ambassador’s Theatre (and on a nationwide tour).
The production will be directed by Bill Alexander and was written by Anton Burg.
Bette & Joan appears at the Arts Theatre from Thursday 5th May 2011 to Saturday 25th June 2011.
