Two New Cast Members Replace Lauren Ward and Paul Kaye in the Production from Mid-April 2012

It has been announced that both Lauren Ward and Paul Kaye will be stepping down from their respective roles in the Cambridge Theatre’s “Matilda the Musical” in April. The pair, who have been portraying Miss Honey and Mr Wormwood since the show opened last year, will be replaced by Haley Flaherty and Steve Furst, respectively, from Tuesday 17th April 2012 as the show also extends its booking period to Sunday 17th March 2013.

“Matilda the Musical” follows the plot of Roald Dahl’s book with comedian Tim Minchin providing the music and lyrics and Matthew Warchus taking on directing duties. It originally appeared at the RSC’s Courtyard Theatre before its transfer to the West End, where it displaced “Chicago” at the Cambridge Theatre. Its story circles around Matilda, a bright young girl who uses her powers of intellect – plus her eventual powers of telekinesis – to punish those that have wronged others.

The story has been a popular once since it was first published in 1988. Since then it has been adapted on numerous occasions, from this musical and a Radio 4 two-parter to a 1996 movie version directed by Danny DeVito (who is appearing this year in “The Sunshine Boys” in the West End).

Haley Flaherty has appeared in various shows in the West End over the years, including “Grease” at the Dominion Theatre (and on a UK tour), “Thoroughly Modern Millie” at the Shaftesbury Theatre and “Saturday Night Fever” at the Apollo Theatre. She has also appeared at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park in productions such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (which returns this year with a new cast) and “The Boyfriend”.

Steve Furst, meanwhile, is best known for his television work, which includes “Little Britain”, “Rob Brydon’s Annually Retentive” and the Orange Mobile Phones ads that appear in front of movies in UK cinemas. He has also performed on clubs around the country as the character of Lenny Beige.

Bertie Carvel and Josie Walker will continue in the roles of Miss Trunchball and Mrs Wormwood (the former until Sunday 1st July 2012).

“Matilda the Musical” continues at the Cambridge Theatre and is now booking until Sunday 17th March 2013.
