Harriet Thorpe in Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre
The Well Known Actress Returns to the role of Madame Morrible Following Her First Appearance in 2008
Wicked lands in the news again this week following the news, two weeks ago, that it had welcomed its five millionth audience member to its home of the Apollo Victoria Theatre. This time it is a casting announcement to turns heads towards the West End as Harriet Thorpe is set to return to the role of Madame Morrible, three years since she originally stepped down from the role in 2010.
Thorpe is a West End regular, though her career also includes various television comedy performances from Absolutely Fabulous, French And Saunders and The Brittas Empire to A Bit Of Fry And Laurie and Alexei Sayle’s Stuff. Her London theatre roles have include her original run in Wicked from 2008 to 2010, plus Cabaret at the Lyric Theatre, Les Misérables at the Queen’s Theatre, Mamma Mia! at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Brighton Rock at the Almeida Theatre and Crazy For You at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park. As such, regular audiences in the capital will instantly recognise the actress when she returns to the Apollo Victoria Theatre.
Wicked, of course, is the high profile musical prequel to The Wizard Of Oz, in which we meet two school students whose conflict eventually spills out into all of Oz. One of them is a popular, beautiful girl and the other is cursed with emerald green skin and prefers to study. But this playground rivalry is something that everyone will have to deal with as one grows up to be Glinda the Good Witch and the other Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West.
The Broadway hit opened its doors at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in September 2006 and has since become one of the biggest musicals in town, as highlighted by its recent milestone of welcoming its five millionth audience member, a feat that producers take seriously and may ensure it remains for many years to come. It is already among the longer-running musicals in the capital, though it has some way to go to catch up with The Phantom of the Opera and others, which have been running for nearly 3 decades.
Harriet Thorpe returns to Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre from Monday 22nd April 2013 to Saturday 16th November 2013 - replacing the indisposed Louise Plowright.
