Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - Apollo Theatre

The last few weeks have seen various shows make casting announcements, with Alice Fearn revealed as a new cast member of Wicked and Elaine Paige joining this Christmas’s Dick Whittington at the London Palladium. But for the latest stage announcement we turn our attentions to the upcoming production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Apollo Theatre, which is set to star Sienna Miller, Colm Meaney and Jack O’Connell when it opens this July.

Hayley Squires is amongst the new names announced as she joins the cast as Mae. Meanwhile, Lisa Palfrey will join Colm Meaney’s Big Daddy as she takes on the role of Big Mama, Brian Gleeson plays Gooper and both Michael J Shannon and Richard Hansel also join the cast.

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is, of course, the classic story from Tennessee Williams, which was first seen by audiences back in the 1950s and later spawned a film adaptation that starred Paul Newman, amongst others. The story itself focuses on a family comprised of some now-iconic characters, including Big Daddy (Meaney), Big Mama (Palfrey), Maggie (Miller), Mae (Squires), Cooper (Gleeson) and Brick (O’Connell). Couple Brick and Maggie are visiting the Brick’s family’s plantation in Mississippi as it is Big Daddy’s birthday and during the course of the evening we learn about the characters and witness as secrets and tensions threaten to tear them apart, alongside the news of Big Daddy’s illness.

Performer Hayley Squires has appeared in a range of films and television programmes in recent years, whilst also working with regular West End director Jamie Lloyd for The Pitchford Disney at the Shoreditch Town Hall. Audiences might recognise her from I, Daniel Blake from director Ken Loach and 2013’s Complicit. In regards to small-screen projects, her credits include Call The Midwife and Southcliffe, amongst others.

So whilst the show already boasts some recognisable names in Sienna Miller and Colm Meaney, more familiar faces now join the cast and add to the myriad performers headed to the West End this year following recent announcements.

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof runs at the Apollo Theatre from Monday 24th July 2017 (previews from Thursday 13th July 2017).
