The Woman in Black - Fortune Theatre

It’s been a while since The Woman in Black was in the news, with an extension announced in February and the current cast members – Stuart Fox and Joseph Chance – announced for the lead roles back in November.

But now the long-running horror show finds itself in the spotlight again as new cast members are revealed for the lead roles of The Actor and Arthur Kipps, with James Byng playing the former part and Terence Wilton the latter from the end of August.

The Woman In Black is amongst the West End’s longest running shows and is second only to The Mousetrap as the longest running play in the capital. It has a long way to go to catch up to the Agatha Christie mystery’s mammoth 65 years but at nearly three decades old, The Woman In Black has enjoyed an impressive run in the capital.

But its regular refreshing of the cast will ensure its longevity continues and the next performers joining it do so with various credits to their names. James Byng has appeared in numerous stage productions in the capital, with West End credits like The Lord Of The Rings at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Les Misérables at the Palace Theatre and The History Boys on tour. He has also acted on television so audiences headed to the Fortune Theatre might recognise him from the small screen.

The Woman In Black finds an aging Arthur Kipps telling his story to an actor ready to perform it onstage and as such we flashback to the events early in Kipps’ career as a solicitor when he was tasked with settling an estate at the Eel Marsh House. Soon he becomes embroiled in the mystery of the spectral woman in black and during the course of the performance we will witness some spooky happenings.

So The Woman In Black finds itself in the spotlight again and it is a nice reminder to audiences that they can still see this acclaimed stage adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel. It is currently booking at the Fortune Theatre until Saturday 3rd March 2018.
