James McAvoy in Macbeth at Trafalgar Studios 1
X-Men Actor Appearing in Jamie Lloyd’s Production from February 2013 as Part of Trafalgar Transformed Season
Screen actor James McAvoy is set to return to the capital next year following his appearance in west end shows like “Three Days of Rain” at the Apollo Theatre in 2009. He is set to appear in Shakespeare’s famous Scottish play “Macbeth” at Trafalgar Studios 1 from February as part of the political Trafalgar Transformed season.
It follows the run of another political show in the form of “Yes, Prime Minister”, which is set to end its latest appearance in the capital this January. Despite its political leanings, it is not part of the season and that instead begins with “Macbeth”.
“Macbeth” is, of course, Shakespeare’s famous dark tragedy that is set in Scotland with Lord Macbeth opting for evil in his bid for power. We explore the political ramifications of this decision as regicide, murder and war become wrapped around his rise as a figurehead. This production is directed by Jamie Lloyd and it will be the latest in a long line of stand-out shows for the London theatre regular, who has previously brought plays to the National, the Donmar and beyond. He also directed McAvoy in the mentioned “Three Days of Rain”.
McAvoy is a well known actor and whilst he has brought work to the West End before he is better known for his screen career, which has seen him mix independent productions with Hollywood fare. He has portrayed Professor Xavier in comic book prequel “X-Men: First Class” (a role he reprises in 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past”), appeared alongside Angelina Jolie in “Wanted”, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” and also appeared in the breakout “The Last King of Scotland”. On the stage his credits include “Breathing Corpses” at the Royal Court Theatre in 2005 and “Privates On Parade” at the Donmar Warehouse in 2001.
Such roles have earned him Olivier and BAFTA award nominations.
“Macbeth” is set to appear at Trafalgar Studios 1 from Saturday 9th February 2013 with a run lasting to Saturday 27th April 2013.
