Jane Horrocks in East Is East at Trafalgar Studios 1
Sam Yates Directs the Production as Part of Jamie Lloyd’s Trafalgar Transformed Season from October 2014
Jamie Lloyd’s second Trafalgar Transformed season continues to take shape as Jane Horrocks is announced for a new production of the popular play East Is East at Trafalgar Studios 1 in October. It is the latest occasion in which a well known actor has been associated with the season, with this year also seeing Martin Freeman in Richard III and last year seeing names like James McAvoy, John Simm and Hayley Atwell in The Hothouse and The Pride respectively.
East Is East is the well known story from Ayub Khan Din that first appeared on the stage of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1996. It has since been seen in the West End and on cinema screens when Damien O’Donnell directed a movie adaptation in 1999.
Set in 1970s Salford, it follows a Pakistani family with the children and parents at opposing views regarding their way of life. The father, George, wishes the family to have a Pakistani, Muslim, upbringing whereas the children see themselves as British and take on more Western customs. The story spawned a movie sequel in 2010 called West Is West.
Jane Horrocks has appeared in a wealth of shows on the stage and screen during an impressive career. For the stage her most famous is certainly The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice at the National Theatre in the 1990s (under the direction of Sam Mendes), a stage production that was reproduced for the screen as Little Voice with Horrocks reprising her role. Beyond this she has appeared in Annie Get Your Gun at The Young Vic Theatre in 2009, Absurd Person Singular at the Garrick Theatre in 2007 and Sweet Panic at the Duke of York’s Theatre in 2003. She is also known for roles in Absolutely Fabulous and Chicken Run. She stars alongside Khan Din in East Is East.
Sam Yates directs the production and he is the first to helm a show at Trafalgar Transformed besides Jamie Lloyd. His previous credits include Billy Liar at the Manchester Royal Exchange, The El Train at the Hoxton Hall and Cornelius in New York.
East Is East runs at Trafalgar Studios 1 from Saturday 4th October 2014 to Saturday 3rd January 2015.
