Julian Ovenden and Matt Bardock in My Night With Reg at the Apollo Theatre
Over the summer, Kevin Elyot’s 1994 play My Night With Reg appeared at the Donmar Warehouse with Julian Ovenden and Matt Bardock in lead roles. Now, on a day in which it is also announced that the Young Vic’s A View From The Bridge will also be headed to the West End, it has been revealed that the show will run at the Apollo Theatre in 2015.
Kevin Elyot, who passed away this year at the age of 62, penned the piece in the early 1990s and it was first staged at the Royal Court Theatre in 1994. It takes audiences back to the summer of 1985 where we meet a group of friends within the gay community of London. With the AIDS crisis looming it is a time of great change. The events are set at Guy’s flat, with three different episodes depicting gatherings in his home, including a party and a post-funeral gathering.
The show is directed by Robert Hastie, someone considering a new talent in the London theatre scene whose work is set to make a big impression in years to come. Other cast members he will be directing include Jonathan Broadbent, Richard Cant, Lewis Reeves and Geoffrey Streatfeild.
The actor Julian Ovenden will be best known to audiences for his screen roles in the likes of Downton Abbey, Foyle’s War and The Forsyte Sage, however, his stage career has also regularly brought him to the attention of London theatre audiences. His theatre credits include Merrily We Roll Along at the Donmar Warehouse, Butley at the Booth Theatre, New York, Grand Hotel at the Donmar Warehouse and Annie Get Your Gun at the Young Vic Theatre.
Meanwhile, co-star Mat Bardock has also accumulated numerous stage roles, including The Dark at the Donmar Warehouse, with film roles that include Mike Leigh’s All Or Nothing and Topsy-Turvy and the Woody Allen film Cassandra’s Dream.
Currently the home of Urinetown the Musical (recent revealed the feature Phill Jupitus from December), the Apollo Theatre welcomes My Night With Reg from Friday 23rd January 2015 (previews from Saturday 17th January 2015) to Saturday 11th April 2015.
