Justin Lee Collins in Rock of Ages at the Shaftesbury Theatre
Television Personality and Comedian Added to the West End Musical Cast
“Rock Of Ages”, the latest jukebox musical to make its presence known in the capital, is set to open its doors at the Shaftesbury Theatre in August 2011. It is not the only new show opening in the West End to take its music from the hits of well known artists – with “Million Dollar Quartet” amongst the newcomers of 2011 – but it is the first to celebrate all things glam rock as a wealth of 1980s metal makes its way to the stage.
The latest update for the show, however, concerns its cast as it announces Justin Lee Collins for a leading role in the production – bar owner Dennis Dupree.
Justin Lee Collins is a well known television presenter and comedian who has appeared on a host of television shows over the years, from “The Friday Night Project” to “The Sunday Night Project”, plus one-off specials such as “Bring Back The A Team”. He is a well known fan of classic rock and has previously made his way to the West End in the likes of “Chicago” at the Cambridge Theatre, where he learnt the tricks of the trade as part of a programme for Sky1.
In “Rock of Ages” is also in production as a movie set to hit cinema screens in 2012 with Tom Cruise, Paul Giamatti and Catherine Zeta Jones (who also starred in the big screen version of “Chicago”). It tells the story of a small town girl called Sherrie and an LA rocker called Drew, who both bond and embark on a whirlwind romance thanks to their mutual admiration for glam rock.
Audiences can expect songs such as “I Wanna Rock”, “We Built this City”, “I Wanna Know What Love Is” and “The Final Countdown”, among others.
The show has previously been seen all over the world and has its origins on the other side of the Atlantic – where it attracted huge crowds on Broadway – making it a show with an international reputation. It is also likely to earn plenty of admiration when London theatre audiences witness it later in the year.
“Rock of Ages” is at the Shaftesbury Theatre from Tuesday 27th September 2011 (with previews from Wednesday 31st August 2011).
