Kimberley Walsh Replacing Amanda Holden in Shrek
Girls Aloud Singer Set to Appear as Princess Fiona at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane
“Shrek The Musical” has received a lot of fanfare ever since it was first announced last year and its cast also received plenty of attention when it was announced in the form of Nigel Lindsay, Richard Blackwood, Nigel Harman and Amanda Holden. Today, however, it has been announced that the latter will be stepping down from the production in October due to pregnancy and that Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh will be stepping onto the stage of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane to replace her.
She will be portraying Princess Fiona in the London theatre production, the character that is saved from a fire-breathing dragon by Shrek the Ogre (Lindsay). The latter is a grumpy swamp-dwelling character who has embarked on a mission to save his home alongside a wise-cracking Donkey (Blackwood). But there’s a problem; by saving Fiona Shrek has stopped a handsome prince from doing the same and that was not a part of the plan. Nigel Harman portrays the character of Lord Farquaad.
Kimberley Walsh shot to fame when she appeared in the reality talent show “Popstars the Rivals” almost ten years ago and was selected to be a member of the girl group the show was creating called Girls Aloud, alongside Cheryl Cole, Nicola Roberts, Nadine Coyle and Sarah Harding. Since then the group has remained in the spotlight and Walsh has also taken on other projects and appeared in the songs of other artists as well. She hosts the show “Suck My Pop” which is broadcast on Viva and has appeared in a performance of “Les Miserables” at the Queen’s Theatre in the West End.
Her upcoming co-star Nigel Lindsay has also appeared in a range of television shows, movies and theatrical productions over the years, from the movie “Four Lions” to Royal Court theatre shows such as “Sucker Punch”.
Holden will remain in the role of Princess Fiona until Monday 3rd October 2011 with Walsh stepping into the role on Wednesday 5th October 2011. Meanwhile, “Shrek the Musical” continues its run at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and is booking to Sunday 21st October 2012.
