Kinky Boots Amongst the Winners of the Evening Standard Theatre Awards

Tuesday, 24th Nov 2015

Fans of the musical Kinky Boots will not be surprised to learn that the popular show picked up the award for Best Musical at the 61st London Evening Standard Theatre Awards at the Old Vic Theatre this week. It is a big win for the show at the Adelphi theatre and is bound to boost the numbers of theatregoers heading that way before its closure in the early months of 2016.

Other winners of the night included The Motherf***er With A Hat at the National Theatre (Best Play), James McAvoy in The Ruling Class at Trafalgar Studios (Best Actor), Nicole Kidman in Photograph 51 at the Noel Coward Theatre (Best Actress), Imelda Staunton in Gypsy at the Savoy Theatre (Best Musical Performance), Robert Icke for Oresteia at the Trafalgar Studios (Best Director) and Gemma Arteron in Made in Dagenham at the Adelphi Theatre (Newcomer in a Musical Award), amongst others.

Kinky Boots follows the story of Charlie Price and the struggle he faces with the shoe factory that he has inherited from his father. The business is not doing as well as expected and it is up to him to turn its luck around and ensure his father’s legacy. But to do this he may have to take some unexpected steps, including a partnership with drag queen Lola, who has some outrageous ideas that might just be the ticket. The show explores the fortunes of the company and the relationship between Charlie and Lola.

The show famously features music and lyrics from 80s popstar Cyndi Lauper. She earned the Tony Award for Best Score for her efforts when the production ran in New York and it was the latest in a long line of hits for the star. She is best known for songs like True Colors and Girls Just Want To Have Fun, though she has also made her way into the spotlight with film and stage appearances during her career.

Full details of the results can be found at the Evening Standard website. Meanwhile, Kinky Boots continues at the Adelphi Theatre until Saturday 28th May 2016.
