The Show will Appear in an as-yet Unannounced Venue from 2015

The hit Broadway musical Kinky Boots, based on the 2005 movie of the same name, has been announced as the latest New York success story to be making its way to the West End. The show, which has yet to be granted venue, will land in the capital at some point in 2015 and will offer London theatre audiences the chance to see a musical penned by 80s pop-star Cyndi Lauper.

The original movie was a comedy set in Northampton and for the stage version Lauper put together a score that included acclaimed musical numbers such as Take What You Got, Sex Is In The Heel, The History Of Wrong Guys, Everybody Say Yeah and In This Corner, among others.
The plot centres on a shoe factory in the UK, where the young owner, looking at his failing business, forms a partnership with someone he thinks will save it all. Lola, a drag queen, is an unlikely partner at first but during the course of the show – thanks to some outrageous footwear designs – it seems that they might have more in common than first thought.

Cyndi Lauper had a range of chart hits in the 1980s and as a result she was one of the biggest stars of the era, with albums like She’s So Unusual and songs like Time After Time and Girls Just Want To Have Fun, among others. She has continued to release work since then, although despite the hugely successful recent album Memphis Blues, she remains best known for her 80s work. Her work with Kinky Boots marks the first time she has penned a musical and it earned her the Tony Award for Best Score in 2013.

The Best Score Award was one of many for the production, with other examples like Best Musical and Best Choreography, and as a result there will be a lot of anticipation as it heads across the Atlantic. When it’s here it will be joining an array of shows based on hit movies such as Billy Elliot The Musical, The Bodyguard and the upcoming Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Kinky Boots will appear in the West End from some time in 2015, with more information to be announced down the line.
